TERMS and CONDITIONS OF THE E-BIKE/PEDELEC CONSTRUCTION COMPETITION

International student competition in making of an electric bicycle will take place in two e-bike categories. The following table shows the classification of vehicles by these two categories.

LIMITS AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF THE E-BIKEs/PEDELECs

E-BIKE CATEGORY A
(ROAD CATEGORY)

E-BIKE CATEGORY B
(OPEN CATEGORY)

THE AMOUNT OF FUNDS SPENT
≤ 500,00 EUR without VAT used only for conversion components.
(financial documentation)

THE AMOUNT OF FUNDS SPENT
No limitations and bicycles that cannot be clearly classified to the category A

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

maximum continuous rated power of 250 W
maximum speed 25 km/h
E-bike with Pedelec function
(tehnical documentation)

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

No limitations regarding technical characteristics. The only condition is the electrically supported drive system.

PROJECT FINANCING

Teams must provide their own funding through sponsors or otherwise. Sponsors and donators can be advertised on electric bicycle and clothes of competitors.

THE CRITERIA FOR GRADING EACH OF THE COMPETITION CATEGORIES

TThe jury will evaluate both e-bike categories in different competition disciplines. The evaluation will be relative. The winning team in each competition discipline is awarded 100 % of points, while others are given the relative rate of the winning team’s achievement. Winner will be the team that collects the most total points from all disciplines.

  • Teams in the e-bike category A, will have to send financial and technical documentation to the Organizing Committee at least 7 days before the competition. The Organizing Committee will review the technical documentation, its correlation to the financial documentation and its credibility. If there is any reasonable doubt regarding fulfillment of criteria for the e-bike category A, the racing team will be automatically placed in the e-bike category B.

  • E-bike category B is intended for innovative electric bikes. Therefore there are no financial and technical restrictions.

In the competition it is allowed to replace or recharge the battery before each competition discipline. If the team uses more batteries, then they must be identical. Within each competition discipline the same battery must be used from the start to finish without charging. The e-bikes must appear unchanged in all competition disciplines. As long as the e-bike is competing in the competition discipline, it can be repaired only by the driver. However, between individual completion disciplines it can be repaired by the entire team.

The following competition disciplines will be evaluated:

  1. AMOUNT OF FUNDS SPENT (financial documentation)

  2. In this competition discipline the amount of production costs for e-bike, which may not exceed € 500.00 without VAT, will be evaluated. Only the costs of components required for conversion into an e-bike are considered, while the value of the bike and the basic equipment (lights, bell, brakes) is exempted. Financial documentation must include a VALUE LIST of all components and other supplies. Original invoices and offers of components which show the value of the individual components must be annexed to the aforementioned Value list. In the case that the purchase includes any discounts, the value without a discount will be taken into account. Example of evaluation; minimum cost of winning teams is € 300,00 . The team that has spent € 490,00 will received (300/490) * 100 = 61.22 points.

  3. TEHNICAL DOCUMENTATION

  4. The technical documentation must give a clear overview of the entire manufacturing process of an E-bike and must prove that the product complies with European safety norms. E-bike must have a Pedelec function. There will be type examination regarding conformity with Directive 2002/24/EC: cycles with pedal assistance which are equipped with an auxiliary electric motor having a maximum continuous rated power of 0,25 kW, of which the output is progressively reduced and finally cut off as the vehicle reaches a speed of 25 km/h, or sooner, if the cyclist stops pedaling.

In the category A the focus is on road suitability and functionality of bicycles. Due to this E-bike must prove that the product complies with European Safety Norms (Directive 2002/24/EC). Bikes in category A must have pedals and pedelec function. In the case pedelec function will not work or bike will not have it points will be deducted in this discipline. Pedelec function significantly contributes to the quality of cycling itself. However it will not be assessed in racing disciplines 4-6, which purpose is to estimate the electrical parts of the bike.

In order to do this the teams must provide:

    • INTRODUCTION CONCEPTUAL DESIGN; a description of the constituent of components, and justify their choice (quantitative BOM).
    • DESCRIPTION OF MODIFICATION OF e-bike/Pedelec; a description of the manufacturing process, a schematic diagram (wiring scheme, dimensions, mounting diagram).
    • TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS;

Example of evaluation; Evaluation Committee will review if all the items listed above are described and presented and evaluate the submitted documentation.

  5. INNOVATIVE TECHNICAL SOLUTION

  6.

  7. COMPETITION DISCIPLINE OVERCOMING DISTANCE

  8. Competition will take place at the racecourse track Kamnica. The ground/surface is sandy and firm, each complete circle measures 800 meters. All teams start simultaneously and drive on time. First 80 m drivers can help with pedal power, after that only electric drive is allowed. The driver’s mass must exceed 50 kg. Winner is the team which covers the largest distance in 2 hours. One change of driver is allowed. Only full rounds will count. Example of evaluation; winning team overcomes 50 km in two hours . The team that has overcome 40 kilometers receives (40/50) * 100 = 80 %.

  9. COMPETITION DISCIPLINE OVERCOMING SLOPE

  10. Competition will take place at a local road with asphalt surface, slope gradients of 18 %. Teams compete separately: winner is the team which overcomes a greater distance up the slope. 20 meters before the start line, the rider can use pedal power – to help start. From the start line, where the time measurement starts, only electrically-powered drive is allowed. The driver’s mass must exceed 50 kg. Time in that discipline will be considered only in the case of equal final scores of two or more teams. Each team can ride twice, but with different drivers. The wheels have to be constantly in contact with the road surface (no jumping). Example of evaluation; winning team overcomes the entire 200 m slope. The team that overcame only the first 150 m of the slope will receive (150/200) * 100 = 75 %. In the case that all teams overcome the 200 m slope everyone gets all points.

  11. COMPETITION DISCIPLINE DRIVING SKILLS

  12. Competition will take place in the center of Maribor. The ground/surface is partially asphalt and partially paved. Teams compete separately: winner is the team with fastest time and with least penalty points. Penalties are graded with extra time. Each team can ride twice, but with different drivers. Only electrically-powered drive is allowed, while driver’s mass must exceed 50 kg. Example of evaluation; winning team in 120 seconds overcomes all obstacles on the skill track. The team which has overcome all obstacles on the skill track within 150 seconds will receive (120/150) * 100 = 80 %.

  • NON-COMPETITION CATEGORY - SPEED RACE
Teams will be divided into two groups with only one team from each faculty:

    GROUP AGROUP B
    TEAM X 1 TEAM X 2
    TEAM Y TEAM W
    TEAM Z1 TEAM Z2

In group each team races against other two teams, winners of each group race for final winner.

Draw of starting numbers will be held at Hipodrom Kamnica before the first categorie. In case of two teams from individual faculty they will first draw if they are 1ST or 2ND team of the faculty. Then the 1ST teams of each faculty will draw starting order of faculties: 1ST, 2ND .... Second teams of each faculty will automatically get starting number increased for number of faculties. Example: FERI Maribor 1 draws number 2, and because there are 3 faculties FERI Maribor 2 automatically gets number 5.
